North High Band News
Open House Bake Sale and Rehearsals:
Many, many thanks to Mrs. Stark, Mrs Oleze, and Mrs. Prokosch for helping organize the bake sale and thank you to those parents who contributed food items to hep raise money for your students band program.
Concert Jazz Band:
We have survived the summer quite nicely. Paws will work for our rehearsal even if it is only 30 min. We will make sure that important paws doings will be done. Students must find an outside school time to meet in their own section. This is a must if we are to do well this year. Upcoming performances are as follows:
Weds, sept. 24 at 6:30-7:00 P.M. for the NHS induction Ceremony
Tues., Oct. 13th Right after school at the Concordia Arms Apt.
Freshmen Jazz Band:
Congratulations to the following students who have bravely stepped up to learn more about jazz: Cassie Sawada, Kathleen Weschcke, Cassie Krenz, Eric Bruun, Naomi Heu, William Kostelnik, Emily Erickson, Nathan Tretsven, Zack Stickler, G. Travis Peterson, Hunter Books, Branden Mickelsen, Ed Rasmussen and Pierre Edwards. Rehearsals will be held two mornings each week during zero hour. We will Start very soon. I am waiting to make sure sports in the a.m. during winter and I don't conflict. Additional students would be welcomed, especially amongst the 15 sax players only two of which have signed up.
Pep Band
First Performance is Thurs. Sept 11th, Girls Volley Ball Game 7:00P.M. Be in the band room at 5:30 P.M. to rehearse. Need a parent, please call 651-748-6059.
Pep band is a volunteer group of students who wish to carry on the proud North High tradition of performing at our sports games. We do not play at all the games. Typically, we would play for three each of the sports that welcome us. This totals up to somewhere around 15-20 home games from now until March. Those students who complete 75% of the listed games can earn Varsity Band Letter. We need to have a parent volunteer to accompany these students. No, you don't have to play or conduct. We have great student leaders for that. The school board cut this part of my contract and I am trying to make it happen without angering my union or other music teachers in the district. Several parents usually help out, so you are not stuck with all of them. Let me know ASAP. Congratulations to: Kristen Klaver, Cassie Shivers, Sam Hammond, Shelly Anderson, Maxine Kobinski, Allison Bristow, Keiryn Kuehn, Samantha Harden, Beth Dvorak, Erin Murphy, Ryan Peterson, Nick Oelze, Andrew Mercado, Matt Epland, Emily Fischer, Kathleen Wescheke, Cassie Sowada, Annika Asp, Elizabeth Casperson, Emily Nelson, Cassie Krenz, Jonathan Williams, Taylor Korum, Amy Gunnufson, Naomi Heu, Luke Rainer, Foster Moren, Levi McDaniels, Luke Hoistman, Pierre Edwards, Devon Bady, Tarrance Hardie, Nathan Tretsven, Emily Erickson. Not to late to join.
Marching Band
Marching Band is a required performance for all band students. Their first big performance is The North St. Paul Heritage Days Parade on Sat. Sept. 20th. Parade Starts at North at 3:00 P.M. Please show up at 1:00P.M. sharp to rehearse. This is the only required parade we do. If there is enough interest to march at a second parade for the Anoka Halloween Parade on Sat. Oct. 25 at 1:00P.M. we will do it and those of you who couldn't make the other one can use it as a make up. If there isn't enough to go I have nothing at the moment for make ups, sorry. Parent volunteers will be needed. Please let me know ASAP. I will be asking very soon for all students marching in this event to bring an Hawaiian shirt or very colorful substitute to class to show me they have one that is acceptable. This shirt, a pair of shorts, and tennis will be the official uniform. "Savers" has $1 shirts, no one should spend a lot of money on this. Lyres and flip folers are also required for this performance and the Indoor Marching Concert in November. Get them from music stores in the area.

North High Indoor Marching Band Concert
Mark your calendars: Nov. 19th. Marching in the aisles, great Pop tunes, dancing around, having a good time, invite the entire extended family, 7:00 P.M. No admission, New t-shirt is the uniform. Did you order yours?? All bands attendance required. It's a BLAST!!
Great Parent Conferences!!
It truly is an honor teaching your students!! After meeting many of you new ones with the return of the "old" ones, the phrase " The acorn never drops far from the tree" really holds true. Well done, parents!!!
Chicago Trip
We have a great bunch of students and parents signed up. If you care to change your mind, hurry up and get your $50 in; space is running out. Some hoped -for goals: two major performances/clinics, one college, one Vets. Possible train instead of bus to Chicago. Trip to occur during our March vacation time. Leave 1st Sat. of the break and return on or before Wed.(leaves you the rest of the week to plan other things) Definitely do all the major attractions including huge Field Museum, Jazz Club, Chicago style pizza, Science and Industry, etc. More very soon.
Sneeze Season Here
Help!!!!! We have no budget for kleenex at all!!! Please send as many boxes as you can afford.
Parade Season Success
Anoka parade was an outstanding experience. Third place finish: one point behind two summer marching program giants (Lakeville, etc.) . The "race" that the parade became after the judging wasn't all that pleasant and a judge telling us the wrong info for the judging stand was not cool, but life goes on. Many thanks to the two or three mothers that have continually helped out with uniforms. It made the students experiences go much better.
Mr B's Grading Philosophy
My grading beliefs are as follows: 1. I tell myself with each item I consider to "keep it simple, stupid!" The more complicated it gets the harder it is for everyone, including myself to really understand. 2. Grades should reflect directly upon the effort given, work assigned or performed and the results obtained. 3. Grades should not be the ultimate goal of your experiences in band. In an ideal world the records we compile throughout our lives should reflect the learning we have accomplished, the experiences that have added to our personality and the growth of our talents and expertise. The reality I'm afraid is somewhat less and because of that the wonderful world of the GPA takes on an elevated importance.
I see band as a performing medium, a place to improve your individual talent at whatever level you start at and as a place to develop the knowledge and skills that will help you as an adult. I start with the six most important measurable areas that reflect on what I just stated. Performance is concentrated into two areas in the Fall Trimester: Marching 30% and Indoor Concert 30%, Getting Ready to do a good job 10%, Alfred music software(three chapters completed) 10%, Rehearsal Behavior 10% and Green Book Assignments 10%.
The list of actual grading items all fall into one of the above categories. At the beginning of the year I listed what I knew we usually covered. Keep in mind that changes will occur for a variety of reasons. Here are a few: Our Homecoming performance was on again off again for a short while because of limited performance time during half and lots of people wanting that time. Depending on how well the band learns performance music and how much time that takes will determine the amount of other assignments that I can reasonably expect them to accomplish. Ex: Unit on relative minor scales and their relationship to major keys has been hard for most of the students to grasp, i.e., more time must be spent. The homecoming rehearsal before the game has always been the one opportunity to put all three bands together to make sure we would succeed. The rehearsal is graded as part of the homecoming grade. The "10" points of the 155 points in the 30%Marching folder of the 100% band grade in reality is such a small number that I doubt it winds up being worth 1 real point. So, when a student asks me if their grade will be hurt if they miss I try and tell them the truth, " no, but it is the only chance we get."
I hope the above makes sense. At the least it should give you a glimpse of what I feel is more important then grades. In the past principals have chided me for giving out way too many high grades (80-90%A, B). I don't "give away" anything. As in life, you get what you earn.
Jazz Band Performance Dates
Jazz Band Performance Dates
The two jazz bands that are now rehearsing are doing great!! Freshmen/varsity band don't forget; join us in the band room every Wed. for either late start or advisements. Freshmen Band: We are going to try and save a wonderful band experience that budget cuts and forced schedule changes have tried to do away with: Jazz. The concert band has been operating with added learning opportunities such as solos with "Smart" music computer software, ensemble playing (smaller groups, like instruments), pit orchestra, some drumline practicing opportunities, "Compass" Instrument software and sound track recording studio work along with jazz ensemble during their regular class time.
We are copying a Simley High School program since the beginning of the year, twice a week and it has been a good fit to date. Each student is given independent work and is required to keep a log that I check periodically for grading purposes along with their completed project. For the freshmen I am going to offer this opportunity once a week (Thursday) and continue it during advisements and late starts. The jazz experience will include all percussion, all trumpets, all saxes, all low brass and some help in guitar and piano. Flutes and clarinets will be allowed to choose from the other activities.
We started today but my student assistant didn't quite understand how things work in the library where we do our computer work and did not get access to the machines we had reserved. I promise that will not happen again. Student maturity levels will have a lot to do with how well this works as with most any class and if I see that the educational expectations are not being met we will cease and desist these opportunities. Grading on the portal will change to reflect these new areas.
All Bands: The University of Minnesota's Golden Gopher Marching Band will be presenting their Indoor Marching Concert on Sat., Dec.1 , 7:00 P.M. Tickets are $18, bus from North $5. We usually take a bus full to this fantastic event. Please turn in this amount by Tuesday, Oct. 15 if you wish to attend. Space is limited, so hurry!
Congratts to all band members who participated in the North High Homecoming. You were great!
Anoka Halloween Parade Sat. Oct. 31. Parade starts at 1:00 P.M. We will arrive at 1:45 (back end of parade) Leave North Hi by 1:00P.M. 109 students have signed up to perform. Way to go!!! More later.
Holidazzel Parades in Minneapolis: They want 30 or our best to dress up in their lighted outfits and perform on Thursday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 14. Will have a sign up shortly. Fun times!!!
Bring all the relatives to North High Marching Band's Indoor Marching Concert on Monday, Nov. 19th. All bands required!! I told a freshmen band member the other day that if you have to keep asking if every single thing I ask you to do is required you are in the wrong place!
Chicago is on!!! 48 Students, 5 or more adults have their deposits in. We will keep you posted on the great things we will do.
